Man arrested, charged with theft, battery at store
PORTAGE | A Gary man was arrested Thursday morning after police said he was caught shoplifting and struck a store loss prevention officer.
Leamon Holmes, 50, of Gary, was charged with battery and theft after the incident, which occurred about 11:30 a.m. at Menards, 6220 U.S. 6.
According to police, the loss prevention officer saw Holmes taking items off shelves and hiding them on his person before leaving the store. The loss prevention officer approached Holmes once he exited the store, and Homes refused to return to the store. Holmes allegedly struck the store employee in the face.
The victim was assisted by a witness who was in the parking lot at the time of the altercation. Both told police Holmes yelled to a vehicle in the lot either "shoot him, shoot him" or "get him, get him, shoot him." The two or three people in the vehicle left the parking lot.
Men arrested on drug, weapons charges after traffic stop
PORTAGE | Two men were arrested Thursday afternoon after a police officer found drugs and an illegal weapon in a vehicle during a traffic stop on Interstate 94.
Don E. Maxwell, 23, of Hobart, was charged with carrying a handgun without a permit, possession of marijuana and driving while suspended.
Brian J. Campbell, 23, of Gary, was charged with possession of paraphernalia.
After Maxwell was found to be driving on a suspended license, police conducted an inventory of the vehicle. Officers reportedly found a bag containing nearly 15 grams of marijuana in the back seat and a pistol in the trunk.
Police searched Campbell and found a digital scale with remnants of plant material in his pocket, police said.
