2,000 feet of cable stolen from NIPSCO substation in Portage
PORTAGE | Thieves apparently made off with some $26,000 in conductor cable from a NIPSCO substation here.
A NIPSCO supervisor reported to police on Monday that the substation in the area of U.S. 12 and Ind. 249, was secured when he left Friday afternoon. When he returned Monday morning, he found the gate closed, but unlocked.
Missing from the center of the substation was two large spools, some 2,000 feet, of "19/9" conductor cable, valued at $13 per foot.
Air conditioners stolen from mobile home park in Portage
PORTAGE | The management of Oak Tree Village mobile home park reported to police Monday morning that two 3-ton air conditioning units had been stolen from outside two of their rental units in the 200 block of Sandalwood sometime in the last month. The units were valued at $4,000.
Wallet lifted from unlocked car parked in resident's driveway
PORTAGE | A resident of the 3000 block of Cordele reported to police Monday morning that someone entered her unlocked car while parked in her driveway Monday morning and stole her wallet containing several personal bank and insurance cards.
South Haven garage burglary nets amplifier and subwoofer
SOUTH HAVEN | A resident of the 400 block of Prescott Road reported to police Monday afternoon that someone entered his garage and stole several items.
The resident told police that the theft apparently occurred overnight. Missing was a subwoofer, amplifier and wiring kit, all valued at about $275.
Fire strikes abandoned home; investigators seeking cause
PORTER TOWNSHIP | Firefighters from several departments were called to a blaze at an unoccupied home Tuesday morning.
According to a Porter County Sheriff's Department report, an officer was called to 15 S. Starr in the Lake Eliza area about 4:30 a.m. Tuesday. When he responded, fire personnel were on the scene. Flames were visible from the roof and attic area of the home.
The Porter County Fire Investigation Strike Team was called to assist in the investigation of the cause of the fire.
Representatives of the Porter Township Volunteer Fire Department were unavailable Tuesday for additional information.
