Two men arrested on burglary chage
PORTER | Two men were arrested after a homeowner found them inside his home.
Jose Rocha-Leal, 42, of Schererville, and Juan Maritinez-Villarreal, 45, of Gary, were charged with burglary, a Class B felony.
Porter and Chesterton police responded Thursday afternoon to a home in the 100 block of Woodlawn Avenue. Police said the homeowner confronted the two men who had forced entry into the home.
An investigation revealed stolen property in a vehicle and on one of the men. Cash, collectible coins and earrings were taken.
Gaming system stolen
PORTAGE | A resident of an apartment in the 3300 block of Reserve reported to police Thursday night that someone had stolen his PlayStation 4 gaming system, controllers and two games, valued at $700.
Police reported to the residence after a neighbor spotted two men outside the apartment complex. Entry was apparently gained through an unlocked door.
Vehicle scratched before it gets on the road
PORTAGE | A Maryland man reported to police Thursday morning that someone scratched a $90,000 Land Rover Range Rover he was transporting.
The car carrier was parked at a hotel in the 6200 block of U.S. 6 where the man spent the night. He told police he had checked the vehicles before he went to bed and when he checked again in the morning noticed a scratch the entire length of the vehicle.
Fire hydrant struck; driver charged
PORTAGE | A Gary man was arrested on a DUI charge early Friday morning after hitting a fire hydrant at the corner of Lute Road and Sarah Street.
Tyler P. Conley, 25, faces two counts of operating while intoxicated.
The fire hydrant, according to Portage police, was knocked 20 feet from where it was installed. Conley told police he had been drinking, but said the crash happened because he slid on ice. Conley's blood alcohol level measured .091, police said. The legal limit is .08.
