Man arrested, charged with cocaine, pot possession
PORTAGE | A Gary man was arrested Wednesday morning after he was stopped by police for driving recklessly.
Howard Sweet, 25, was stopped at Willowcreek Road and Sunrise Avenue around 2 a.m. Police found cocaine in a cup holder under the front dash of the car. When Sweet was transported to Porter County Jail, jail staff told police a partially burnt marijuana blunt had fallen out of his pants leg.
Sweet was charged with felony possession of cocaine and misdemeanor possession of marijuana.
Two men arrested after falling asleep at theater
PORTAGE | A Chesterton man and a Merrillville man were arrested late Tuesday night after falling asleep at the Portage 16 Imax theater, 6550 U.S. 6.
The two were discovered by employees sleeping near the back of one of the theater rooms after a movie was over. After their attempts to wake them failed, they called police.
Police had to make several attempts to wake Michael Stath, 35, of Chesterton and Alan Svitko, 34, of Merrillville.
According to police, Stath said he had taken Xanax and smoked marijuana prior to going to the movies. Svitko also said he had taken Xanax, police said.
Both were taken to a local hospital for medical clearance before taken to Porter County Jail. Both were charged with public intoxication.
Theft reported from storage unit
PORTAGE | A Hobart resident reported to police Tuesday that several items had been removed from a storage unit he rented at 5830 U.S. 6.
The man told police that about a week and a half ago it appeared the unit had been entered because the lock was broken, but no items were taken.
This time the lock was missing when he came to check and items missing. Missing were three black theater chairs, valued at $1,900; two 42-inch flat screen televisions valued at $900; two oak night stands valued at $2,000 and an oak dresser valued at $3,000.
Man fights with police, is arrested
PORTAGE | Police responded to the call of a disturbance in the 100 block of Coral Avenue about 7 p.m. Tuesday.
When police arrived, including units from Portage and Burns Harbor, they found Mitchell Garcia, 47, of 167 Coral Ave., yelling at a home down the street from his own.
Police said Garcia became combative with officers, yelling and kicking at them. He was placed on the ground and put in handcuffs and leg restraints and carried to a nearby patrol car. On the way to Porter County Jail, Garcia continued to kick at the officer until the officer had to stop and threatened to use his Taser against Garcia.
Garcia was taken to Porter Regional Hospital to be cleared because of his intoxicated state and transported to Porter County Jail after he was medically cleared. He was charged with resisting law enforcement and public intoxication.
