Walmart employee arrested for theft after eating evidence
PORTAGE | An employee of Walmart, 6087 U.S. 6, was arrested Thursday evening for theft, but not before he ate the evidence.
Collin M. Dujmovich, 21, of Hobart, was charged with theft after he was observed on video opening and removing several snack cakes, produce and deli products from their packages and take them into the stock room.
Dujmovich allegedly was then seen eating the food. According to police, he admitted to store security that he had taken several food items over the last two months and ate them in the stock room without attempting to pay for the items.
Burglars take $10,000 in jewelry from Portage home
PORTAGE | A resident of the 3100 block of Sylvania reported to police Sunday afternoon that someone broke into his home and stole several items, including more than $10,000 worth of jewelry.
The victim told police he left his home about 10:30 a.m. Sunday, but when he returned at about 4:30 p.m., he noticed a door had been broken in and several items were missing from the home.
Reported missing were about 50 pieces of jewelry kept in a bag in a spare bedroom closet, valued at about $10,000; $300 in cash taken from a kitchen cabinet; $75 worth of jewelry from another bedroom closet; six gold rings valued at $300 taken from the top of a dresser; a Walkman, MP3 player, binoculars, monocular and batteries valued at $340 taken from a basket sitting on top of a washing machine.
Police: Man arrested for illegally entering residence
PORTAGE | Steven Yakel, 41, of 2805 Brown St., was arrested early Saturday morning and charged with residential entry and resisting law enforcement after he was found in a mobile home in the 300 block of Camelot Estates.
A neighbor in the mobile home park called police at 2:16 a.m. to say she thought someone was breaking into her neighbor's home.
Upon arrival, police could hear someone in the home, but when officers knocked at the door, no one answered. Police saw a man, later identified as Yakel, through a window sitting at the kitchen table.
Yakel allegedly told police he had permission to be at the home and was cleaning it for the resident.
Upon investigating, police found that Yakel's story was not true and he was arrested. As officers attempted to handcuff Yakel, he refused and asked for a ride to his mother's home.
Police used a stun device, but Yakel allegedly continued to resist. Even after being handcuffed, police said, Yakel refused to walk on his own out of the mobile home.
