Burglary reported at home in Chesterton
CHESTERTON | A resident of the 1500 block of Hogan Avenue reported to police Friday night that someone had entered his home and stole cash, a gun and jewelry.
Police were called to the home at 10:30 p.m. when homeowners said someone had entered through a kitchen window and went through several rooms of the house.
Missing was $4,200 in cash, a .45-caliber handgun valued at $600, miscellaneous jewelry and a check book.
Police break up underage drinking party
CHESTERTON | Police arrested 10 people early Sunday morning from an apparent underage drinking party in a garage at 227 S. 14th St.
Police were called due to loud noises coming from the garage. When they arrived, the officer reported hearing the sound of "clinking glass bottles as well as more loud voices, some foul language and general shenanigans."
Jacob Boomsma, 18, of 1304 W. Morgan Ave., Chesterton; Dakota Hartman, 18, of 227 S. 14th St., Chesterton and Matthew Mocabee, 19, of 1304 W. Morgan Ave., Chesterton, were arrested and charged with minor consumption of alcohol. David Gromer II, 19, of 1311 Berg St., Porter, was charged with minor consumption of alcohol and possession of paraphernalia. The parents of six juveniles at the scene were contacted and took custody of their children. The juveniles also face minor consumption of alcohol charges.
Police: Man Tasered while resisting arrest
PORTAGE | A 25-year-old Portage man was arrested just after midnight Sunday morning for refusing to identify himself for police and resisting arrest.
Moises Lopez of 5476 Central Ave., was a passenger in a car pulled over by police for having dark tinted windows on Lute Road.
While the driver was cooperative, Lopez, who was not wearing a seat belt, allegedly told police he didn't have to identify himself. When instructed to exit the car, Lopez refused, according to the report. Police struggled with Lopez and used the stun gun. Lopez then complied and was taken into custody for resisting law enforcement and failure to identify.
Man wandering in parking lot arrested
PORTAGE | A 40-year-old Portage Township man was arrested Saturday afternoon after being reported wandering around the Walmart parking lot, 6087 U.S. 6.
Thomas Risk II was charged with battery to law enforcement, resisting law enforcement, disorderly conduct and public intoxication.
Risk allegedly went into the store to purchase alcohol, but was denied by management.
He then began wandering the parking lot looking for his vehicle.
When found by police, Risk appeared to be impaired and was argumentative with officers. While he tested negative on a portable breath test, a friend who was with Risk said he had given Risk a Xanaz "for his anxiety."
Risk allegedly continued to fight with police even when they took him to the ground and was handcuffed. He threatened police while in the squad car. Police used additional restraints while transporting him to Porter County Jail, they said.
