Grinch breaks into cars, takes gifts, leaves Bible in street
PORTAGE | Police believe thieves entered unlocked cars near the Prairie Duneland Trail early Wednesday, stealing a child's Christmas presents and discarding a woman's Bible in the street.
According to Portage police, officers were called to a home in the 3200 block of Willowdale Road about 4 a.m. after a woman found her daughter's Christmas presents and other items stolen from her car.
The woman told police thieves stole an educational game system and two games, as well as a bag of clothes she left in the car.
Officers began checking the neighborhood and found a Bible in the road in front of a home in the 3200 block of Oakwood Street. A 50-year-old woman said she left the Bible in her car overnight, along with a bag full of church-related items, which were reported stolen.
Police said the woman also reported a GPS unit and a video game system stolen from the car.
Second arrest made in second day of drug interdiction on I-94
PORTAGE | A Jackson Township woman is the second person arrested in as many days on drug-related charges, as Porter County Sheriff's officers join High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area patrols.
According to reports, shortly after 11 a.m. Tuesday, an officer made a routine traffic stop on Interstate 94 near the 17.4 mile marker and found drug paraphernalia in the car.
Authorities said Ashley McCullough, 27, of Jackson Township, was arrested and faces charges for alleged identity deception possession of a hypodermic needle, possession of paraphernalia and having an outstanding warrant.
Investigators said drug-related charges are also pending for a passenger in the car.
Authorities: South Haven man crashed truck into a residence
PORTAGE TOWNSHIP | A South Haven man faces charges for allegedly driving with a suspended license and leaving the scene of a crash after police said he hit a house with his truck.
Around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, Porter County Sheriff's Department officers were called to a home in the 700 block of Timberline Parkway after a man said he heard a crashing sound and discovered a pickup truck crashed into his living room.
Neighbors told police the truck appeared to get stuck in landscaping rocks outside the home and reported seeing a man limping from the scene.
Officers said while they were at the scene, a woman asked officers if her son was OK and positively identified the truck as belonging to her son, Tommy Peeler Jr., 23, of Portage Township.
