Hundreds of shoes taken in burglary
PORTAGE | Apparently a burglar has a shoe fetish.
A Portage man reported to police early Tuesday morning that someone entered his home and stole many items - among them 130 pairs of shoes.
The resident of the 3200 block of Lighthouse called police at 2:15 a.m. Tuesday.
Police said it appears someone entered the residence through an unlocked sliding glass door.
Missing from the home was 120 pairs of men's shoes, valued at $3,000; seven pairs of women's shoes, valued at $1,000; three pairs of children's shoes, valued at $400; a 70-inch flat screen television, valued at $3,000; a 60-inch flat screen television, valued at $700 and a semi automatic handgun, valued at $260.
Semi truck and trailer stolen from lot
PORTAGE | A Merrillville man reported to police Monday afternoon that a semi truck and trailer was stolen from the lot of Combined Freight Systems, 1201 Marine View Drive.
The man said he parked the vehicle in the lot on the morning of Dec. 20. When he arrived at the lot at 10 a.m. Dec. 23, it was missing.
The man is the owner of the truck, a 2005 Freightliner, valued at $43,000, and the business is the owner of the trailer, a 2002 Reitnouer, valued at $20,000.
Snow blower stolen from shed
PORTAGE | A man reported to police Monday morning that someone broke into a shed at the USWA Local 6787 union hall, 1100, Ind. 149, and stole a snow blower.
The machine, valued at $500, was last seen Dec. 20. Evidence indicated someone had kicked open the door to the shed to gain entry.
Wallet, identity stolen
PORTAGE | A Crown Point woman reported to police Monday that her wallet was stolen from her purse while she was at work at Meijer, 6050 U.S. 6.
The woman said she had placed her purse in the break room when she began her shift. It wasn't until she came home that she noticed the wallet missing. During that time, her debit card had been used at five stores in Lake Station and Gary, ringing up more than $120 in charges.
