PORTAGE | On Thursday, April 21, Myers Elementary School first grade classes welcomed Michelle Benson from the Porter County Soil and Water Conservation District.
Mrs. Benson presented the "Sweet on Soil" program for the children. She explained three types of soil and brought in different household items to represent each. Students were given an item and added 1 tablespoon of water to create their soil replica.
After mixing in the water, the students tried to form a ball from their mixture. This demonstrated the type of soil they had in their container. The children were surprised to find out not all soil types could form a ball.
Using their senses, students were able to describe the smell and texture. The students enjoyed their experiment and were happy to work with Mrs. Benson for the second time this year.
