PORTAGE | Police on Thursday discovered 82 pounds of marijuana hidden in a car during a traffic stop on the Indiana Toll Road.
An Indiana State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement trooper was eastbound on the Toll Road about 10:30 a.m. Thursday when he stopped a 2005 Chevrolet Impala near the McCool Road overpass for going 60 mph in a 40 mph zone.
Police said the driver, Armando Bautista, 23, of South Bend, appeared nervous and had inconsistencies in answers to the trooper's question.
A police dog alerted on the Impala and a subsequent search of the car revealed two large compressed bundles of marijuana in the trunk. Police said the bundles weighed 82 pounds.
Bautista was taken to Porter County Jail where he was charged with possession of marijuana and dealing marijuana
Bautista’s 2005 Chevrolet Impala also was seized.
