PORTAGE | The Redevelopment Commission on Wednesday approved a contribution of up to $40,000 to help the city solve its computer woes.
The city has hired Iddea Group of Valparaiso to upgrade the city's information technology infrastructure.
Fire Chief Tom Fieffer, who is also acting information technology chief, told the commission that the city's five servers are outdated and in jeopardy of crashing, which could cause the city to lose valuable information.
The Board of Works approved hiring the Iddea Group in August. Since then the company has been able to back up city files in case there is a crash.
John Mario, senior partner with the group, said the company will eliminate the need for the city's servers. Information will be stored at a secure data center in Chicago. That also will eliminate the need for updating desktop units.
The goal is to bring all city offices online with the same software.
Mayor James Snyder said the contract is approximately $111,000 for the first year, which is less expensive than having to replace servers and other hardware.
The city and the Utility Services Board have approved spending $40,000 each on the upgrades, and the Redevelopment Commission was asked to pay the remainder, up to $40,000.
