PORTAGE | Three suspects in an armed robbery of a convenience store in South Bend were taken into custody Wednesday when a train stopped at the Portage/Ogden Dunes South Shore station.
Two men and one woman, all in their 20s and residents of the South Bend area, were involved in the armed robbery of a 7-Eleven store Wednesday morning, South Bend police Sgt. Dave Beatty said. The two men displayed handguns during the robbery.
Beatty said a fourth person was taken into custody Wednesday. Beatty said he contacted both Amtrak and Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District police about the possibility of the suspects being on the train.
It was confirmed the three were on the train and nearing the Portage/Ogden Dunes station. When the train stopped at the station, employees stalled the train's departure until police could arrive, Beatty said.
Portage Detective Joe Reynolds said police from Portage, Ogden Dunes and Burns Harbor arrived at the station and took the three off the train and into custody without incident.
They were transported to the Portage police station and turned over to South Bend police -- later being transported back to South Bend.
