PORTAGE | The Portage Township School Board this week approved a five-year lease/purchase agreement to equip all district buses with GPS equipment.
The agreement with Synovia of Indianapolis will cost about $230,000 over the five years, and will cover equipment, software and maintenance for 104 district school buses.
Director of Support Services Dave Harman proposed the project. Presently 40 buses have GPS technology attached. Expanding the program, he said, will allow greater tracking capability of school buses not only by the transportation department, but, in the future by building principals and parents, as well.
Its goal is to also help more efficiently manage the fleet by providing data for route management. It will also provide data for payroll efficiency.
