PORTAGE | Three students at New Vistas High School were arrested Friday morning after a fight broke out in their classroom.
Christopher Porter, 20, of 2333 Central Ave., Gary, was charged with battery and disorderly conduct; De'Jshon Hollins, 18, of 6051 Lute Road, Portage, was charged with battery and disorderly conduct; and Charles Denson, 19, of 2325 Connecticut St., Gary, was charged with battery, disorderly conduct and false informing.
Police responded about 10 a.m. Friday to the school, 5391 Central Ave., after a fight broke out in a classroom.
School officials told police the fight started after a teacher divided the classroom into groups. Hollins and Porter were assigned to the same group, but Hollins didn't want to be in the group with Porter. The teacher said the two were arguing and the argument escalated into a physical altercation.
Hollins told police he believes Porter and his friends may have stolen his car stereo the day before and that Porter was taunting him about leaving his car door unlocked leading to the theft. Hollins said that led to Porter throwing the first punch.
Porter accused Hollins of throwing the first punch.
Denson was accused of joining in and kicking Hollins, which he initially denied, then allegedly admitted, leading to the false informing charge, police said.
Hollins received minor lacerations to his cheek and neck. Porter complained of pain. Both declined medical attention.
