PORTAGE | Three people were arrested late Saturday night following a fight in the parking lot of Finder's Mall, 5935 U.S. 6.
An off-duty Portage police officer working security at the business was advised of a fight in the parking lot involving some 30 people at 11:30 p.m. Saturday.
The officer saw two men fighting, ordered them to stop and get on the ground. As most of the crowd dispersed, the men continued to fight and the officer deployed his Taser at who he believed was the aggressor, stunning Martell I. Murphy, 18, of Portage.
Murphy fell to the ground and was handcuffed. Murphy was charged with resisting law enforcement and disorderly conduct.
While Murphy was being arrested, according to the report, others continued to fight.
Then, Darreon M. Thomas, 19, of Crown Point, along with two other men, attempted to advance toward the officer while they "assumed aggressive stances with their fists closed."
The officer drew his pistol and pointed it at Thomas while Thomas continued to advance toward the officer. The other men ran off, according to the report.
Other police officers arrived and handcuffed Thomas. Thomas was charged with resisting law enforcement.
A third man, Tyshon Phillis, 18, of Gary, who was involved in the original fight, fled the scene. Police brought in one of its canine units to track Phillis, who ran to a wooded area behind the parking lot.
Phillis eventually came out from the woods and was arrested for resisting/fleeing law enforcement and disorderly conduct.
All three men were transported to Porter County Jail.
