PORTAGE | For years, C.R. England Inc., an international trucking company with offices in Portage and Burns Harbor, has been helping out the Portage Food Pantry
Last year the employees collected and the management matched a total of $20,000 in food from the Strack and Van Til warehouse. The company then used its truck, and the employees volunteered their time to pick up, deliver and unload all of that food at the pantry.
The Portage Township Food Pantry is all volunteer and depends on the community for financial support and food donations. It costs about $7,000 to buy the food needed for an average month. Monthly utility bills also are a large expense.
The pantry is open on Fridays of the first, third and fourth weeks of the month from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and on the second Thursday of the month from 4 to 7 p.m.
