PORTAGE | Two people were arrested early Saturday after police say a 911 call was made with a hoax in an attempt to avoid a traffic citation.

Police stopped a vehicle just before 6 a.m. at U.S. 6 and Pan Am Boulevard. Authorities pulled over Brittany R. Turner, 27, 3302 Starboard Way, for a traffic infraction.

During the stop, police received an emergency dispatch a man was spotted with an AK-47 style rifle trying to break into an apartment building in the 3300 block of Starboard Way. Police let Turner go with a warning to respond to the emergency call.

Units were dispatched to the apartment complex and to investigate the report of an armed man. They proceeded to enter the building and woke up tenants to make sure they were OK and that no one had entered the building with the rifle.

Authorities did not see an armed man, nor did they see the vehicle in which he was reported to be driving.

However, they did see Turner and two men return to a nearby parking lot. They exchanged words with Turner, Gerald Hollowell, 25, of Merrillville and a second man and saw the three enter Turner's apartment.

Police began questioning the trio when the second man told police Hollowell borrowed his cellphone during the traffic stop and he overheard Hollowell make the 911 call with Turner giving Hollowell an address to report to police.

Following questioning of the three, Turner also said Hollowell made the hoax call. Hollowell denied making the call to police.

Turner was charged with obstruction of traffic and false reporting. She was also issued a citation for driving while suspended. Hollowell was arrested for false reporting. The second man, who provided a written statement to police, was not arrested.
