HAMMOND | The U.S. Department of Labor is suing the owner of a defunct Portage company, alleging he failed to pay about $14,000 withheld from employees' paychecks into their retirement accounts.
Michael D. Roetker, owner of Portage-based Edge Office Solutions Inc., failed to pay $8,489 of the withheld money into employees' company IRA plans between June 2007 and November 2008, according the the lawsuit filed this week in Hammond federal court.
Roetker also withheld another $5,508 between January 2007 and November 2008 and fails to pay the money into the IRA plan "in a timely manner," the lawsuit alleges.
The lawsuit indicates that Roetker's company has since been dissolved by Indiana. Phone numbers for Roetker called by The Times on Thursday were disconnected, and court filings did not indicate whether he had retained an attorney in the matter.
Department of Labor filings indicate the government is seeking a jury demand of a little less than $10,000.
