PORTAGE | Michael E. Oelling, 34, of 3503 Nell Drive, Valparaiso, was arrested Monday, accused of burglarizing a home here earlier this month.
According to a press release from the Portage Police Department, Oelling was charged with two felony counts of burglary.
Portage police detectives received information from a Joseph Street homeowner who foiled Oelling’s attempt to burglarize his home on Dec. 3. The homeowner was able to provide police with a license plate number of the suspect vehicle.
After several days of investigation, police were able to identify Oelling as the suspect in the burglary in the 6200 block of Fallen Timbers Avenue on Dec. 3. In that incident, the back door of the home was broken into while residents were out and several pair of earrings were stolen. Some of the items stolen from that burglary were recovered by detectives, according to the release.
"As with many investigative cases, it may take a few days or even weeks to identify a suspect, develop enough probable cause for an arrest warrant, then locate and arrest a suspect(s)," said Chief Troy Williams.
"Our departmental divisions from patrol, detective, clerical and administrative work seamlessly to combat those who would seek to terrorize or harm our residents. I want our community to know that we will make every effort to keep you safe and to keep you informed," said Williams.
