PORTAGE TOWNSHIP | A local lung cancer patient is without a wheelchair after someone stole it from her daughter’s front yard on Tuesday.
Roberta Clarida, of the 400 block of Plymouth Road, said her mother, who is in a nursing home, has had to use a wheelchair for just a short time.
She said someone else had used it previously, so her husband power washed the chair about 6 p.m. Tuesday and placed it in their front yard to dry in the sun. They had planned to take it back to the nursing home so she would have her own chair to use.
Clarida said they went out about 7 p.m. and realized the wheelchair was gone.
“I thought, ‘Oh my God. Why would someone take someone’s wheelchair? What if she were here and needed it?”
Clarida said her mother can get around in a nursing home wheelchair until they can buy a new chair.
The Innova chair, which was black and silver, was valued at $300, according to authorities.
Clarida said investigators searched the neighborhood, but it wasn’t located. She said her husband called local scrap yards asking them to let them know if it was brought in.
Clarida said she hopes whoever took the wheelchair will return it. She suspects it was probably kids.
“If they return it to me, I don’t have a problem,” she said.
