VALPARAISO | A 19-year-old Portage woman was sentenced Monday to 10 years in prison for sexually abusing an infant in her care.
Dana Haywood is eligible to complete the sentence in half the time or less, after which time she will spend eight years on formal probation, register as a sex offender and undergo sex offender treatment.
Haywood pleaded guilty last month to felony counts of child molesting and neglect of a dependent, in return for the agreed sentence. She had faced six to 20 years behind bars on the molestation charge and another six months to three years on the neglect count.
Police said Haywood came forward March 3 and accused 21-year-old Michigan City resident James Glanders, her former boyfriend, of molesting the 11-month-old girl a month earlier during a diaper change in their vehicle parked at Haven Hollow Park in South Haven.
She claimed Glanders climbed into the rear seat of the vehicle and performed a sex act on the girl.
Glanders admitted to the offense, but accused Haywood of telling him to do so, police said.
Haywood admitted to the claim. She also admitted to having performed the same sex act on the child and touching the girl at the suggestion of Glanders, according to court records.
Glanders provided police with text messages where Haywood asked him about having sex with the child and then proceeded to make very graphic references to the possibilities.
Glanders is charged with Class A felony child molesting and is expected to appear before Bradford Aug. 26.
