PORTAGE | It could be another couple of weeks or so before city officials know if there are any environmental hazards regarding the demolition of the old Don's Motel.

City Engineer John Hannon told the Redevelopment Commission this week that the phase 1 environmental study has been completed and they are expecting a report in a week or so on the results of a phase 2 environmental study. Once those results are in, the commission can seek bids for the demolition of the old motel complex at 5500 U.S. 20.

Mayor James Snyder said in response to a number of complaints the city received about the debris left at the complex following the removal of the mobile homes, the city hired a contractor to clean up that area before the demolition of the motel structure would begin. The cost of that clean up was about $11,100.
