Evening with Santa

All families are invited to an affordable holiday celebration from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Friday. Visit with Santa, play games, make crafts, enjoy a pasta or hot dog dinner, and more. Take a photo with Santa and then make a picture frame in Santa’s Workshop. In the Peppermint Palace, children will participate in nail painting, hair streaking and tattoos. Finish the night with a trip to Santa’s Sweet Shoppe for “Make Your Own Sundae” Bar. Activity tickets will be purchased at the event for a nominal fee. Pre-purchase dinner tickets at the Y for $3.50 and receive a free dessert. Dinner tickets will be sold at the event; bring a canned good for free dessert.

Duneland Family YMCA

School age child care

This child care provides a safe, structured environment for after school care from kindergarten through sixth grade in all Duneland elementary schools from dismissal time to 6 p.m. Early morning care also available from 6 to 7:45 a.m.

Martial arts

Luna Mixed Martial Arts is starting a new season at Duneland YMCA on Tuesday. Classes will meet at 6 p.m. each Tuesday and Thursday. Be part of a team and get fit, strong and confident practicing MMA. This class will now offer a ranking system. Participants will be able to learn and practice self-defense techniques, boxing and kickboxing, Jiu-jitsu, Kung Fu, Muay Thai and grappling. The cost for the course is $60 per month. For those who register before the start date will receive half off the first months' fee. Participants will also receive a free team T-shirt while supplies last.

Parents Night Out

Parents can use the Parents Night Out program and stop worrying about finding a sitter, from 6 to 9:30 p.m. every Friday. Trained YMCA staff have organized and fun activities planned to keep each child’s attention. The cost for members is $10 for the first child and $5 for each additional child. The nonmember rate is $20 for the first child and $10 for each additional child.

Parenting workshop

"Behavior Management for Young Children" Parenting Workshop begins at 6:30 p.m. today at Duneland YMCA Preschool located in Chesterton Middle School, Door No. 8. Join us for a workshop on managing difficult behaviors in preschoolers. Experts on strategies for school and home will provide an interactive learning experience and take-home materials. Information on special needs such as ADHD will also be presented. There is no cost to attend. Childcare will be provided.


Now enrolling 2-year-olds, includes potty training. For children aged six weeks to kindergarten from 5:45 a.m. to - 6:30 p.m. Preschool activities are presented with intent to prepare children for kindergarten. Curriculum consists of structured playtime (group games, science experiments and more) along with unstructured playtime (free choice activities, gym time and more), appreciation for nature, age appropriate academics including shapes, colors, letter recognition and emergent reading, The YMCA's core values are taught and practiced in the areas of responsibility, respect, caring and honesty.

Fit friends month

December is Duneland YMCA Fit Friends Month. Bring a friend to join during the month of December and receive one free month of membership (a minimum $35 value) and free T-shirt for you and your friend ($30 value). The $50 joiners fee for your friend who joins for a minimum of 3 months will be waived.

"Giving Tree" Donations

The Senior Center has been busy making $5 and $10 ornaments for the Duneland Family YMCA annual "Giving Tree". Stop by the Y, pick the ornament of your choice and donate the amount indicated to benefit Duneland families through the Y's Family Assistance Program.

Blood drive

The American Red Cross will host a blood drive from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dec. 16 at the Duneland YMCA. Call (800) RED CROSS or go to redcrossblood.org and enter sponsor code "dunelandymca" to schedule an appointment.

Bone density screenings

The Community Wellness Nurse will be providing bone density screenings from 8:00 to 11:30 a.m. Friday in the Senior Center at the Duneland Family YMCA.

Valparaiso Family YMCA

Can-Do Kids

Classes are from 4:55 to 5:25 p.m. and 5:30 to 6 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. This class is for 3- to 11-year-olds and provides activities for children with special needs. The cost is $20 for both members and residents.

Valpo Skates

Valpo Skates is at 605 Campbell St. in Valparaiso in the Ben Franklin Middle School gym annex. Kindergarten through sixth-graders can skate from 6 to 9 p.m. on Fridays and Family Skate is open from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturdays (all ages). The cost is $6 per skater.

Nutrition for Life

Nutrition for Life offers nutritional counseling in personal, family and group settings led by AFPA Certified Nutrition and Wellness consultants. Learn how to achieve and maintain a healthy lifestyle by counteracting your nutritional struggles. Weigh-ins, body measurements and personalized plans are included in counseling sessions. Free seminars

Midlife Rejuvenation Therapy Seminar is 5:30 p.m.  today. A smoking cessation seminar begins at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday. for any of these seminars, call to register at (888) 909-3627.

Holiday Shake Off Zumba Party

A zumba party is planned from 6 to 8 p.m. Dec. 27 in Studio AB. cost is $5 for Y members and community.

Move It To Lose It: Get It Started!

Receive three hours of training per week for seven weeks, with 30 minutes of lecture and 60 minutes of circuit training each day. There are weekly weigh-ins, three fitness assessments, food journaling, exercise, nutrition lectures.

Two sessions available. Session 1: Jan. 6-Feb. 24; Session 2: Feb. 25 to April 20 (No classes during spring break, March 24-30.) Cost is $140 for Members and $240 for Community. Registration begins Monday for Y members, and Dec. 12 for community. For more information, visit www.valpoymca.org.
