Marina Ahner, 13, enjoys pushing her body to the limit, both in the water and on land.

A swimmer for eight years, she competes with the Hobart Tiger Sharks and is already training to compete next year with Hobart High School swim team.

In addition, Ahner was a divisional qualifier with the Tiger Sharks in the 50- and 100-meter breaststroke from 2009-12.

She began running track and cross country competitively two years ago.

“My mom would run and it looked like fun, so I decided to start. It helps me clear my head when I feel stressed and I enjoy getting the medal or trophy at the end,” she said.

“I would tell someone just run for fun. Who cares if you don’t win at first - it will get better.”

In addition to placing first in the 2012 Hobart's annual Brickyard Run, Ahner has participated in six triathlons consisting of a two-meter swim, an eight-kilometer bike ride and a two-kilometer run, for a total of 6.3 miles.

“My usual time is 31:20, and my future goal is to train and run the Ironman Triathlon,” she said.

Ahner’s next competition falls on her 14th birthday, when she will participate in the 10th Anniversary Fleet Feet Sports 10-mile run in May at Soldier Field in Chicago.

An eighth-grader at Portage Christian School, Ahner maintains a 4.0 grade point average and aspires to be a large animal veterinarian.

She is one of six siblings and is the daughter of Joe (Shannon) Ahner and Kristy (Doug) Galinsky. A Hobart resident, she attends Real Life Community Church in Portage.
