CENTER TOWNSHIP | Police are warning local residents to be on alert after home burglaries and car break-ins have spiked over the last three weeks.

The Aberdeen subdivision in Center Township had a report of seven thefts from vehicles while Porter Township's Lake Eliza area had six vehicle thefts and five residential burglaries, Porter County Sheriff's Department spokesman Sgt. Larry LaFlower said.

“Don't leave valuables in plain view and we're asking people to lock doors,” he said.

Vehicle thefts tend to happen at night while burglaries are happening during the day, LaFlower said.

He said police are also advising people to close their blinds during the day and to keep windows and doors locked.

“At night, leave lights on to make your property visible,” he said.

Sheriff's officials are asking anyone with information about these thefts to call detectives at (219) 477-3140.
