VALPARAISO | A weekend power failure at the Porter County Administration Center left local property owners unable to pay the balance of their tax bills online until late Tuesday morning, the last day the bills can be paid without penalty.
The county bought a backup generator for the building that has yet to be installed, said Porter County Commissioner Nancy Adams, R-Center.
Porter County Treasurer Mike Bucko said the computer payment system was put back online about 10:30 a.m. Tuesday.
Online payments can be made until 11:59 p.m. today, he said.
While the system failure had some land owners sweating, Bucko said those waiting until the last day to pay could have avoided late fees by dropping their payments in the mail Tuesday or dropping them off while the administration center was open.
The weekend outage also caused problems with telephones and other operations at the administration center, which was closed Monday along with the rest of county government in observance of Veterans Day.
"Once it's hooked up, we won't have a problem," Adams said of the new generator.
Tuesday also is the deadline to appeal tax assessments.
