VALPARAISO | Porter County Coroner Chuck Harris issued a warning to county residents about what he believe may be a potentially dangerous batch of heroin being distributed in the area.

The warning comes as the county has recorded its ninth heroin-related death -- as many as all heroin-related deaths in 2012 in Porter County.

Harris said most of the deaths have been confirmed as heroin-related. Just a couple are pending toxicology reports.

Harris said the age range of the deaths so far have been between 20 and 31.

He believes the batches causing the recent fatalities have been unevenly mixed by the drug producers and not tainted with any poisons.

Because of the inability of the drug producers to mix the product correctly, it is highly likely that users could be injecting or snorting extremely high purity levels of the drug.

Several of the people who have died as a result of heroin have had no known history of using heroin.

Additionally, Harris suggests parents to talk to their teenagers about the issue and to be on the lookout for any type of drug paraphernalia hidden in their teenager’s rooms.
