Two arrested, charged with stealing liquor

PORTAGE | Two men, from Hammond and Lake Station, were arrested Wednesday evening for stealing three bottles of Jack Daniels whiskey from Walmart, 6087 U.S. 6.

According to a police report, Jordan Downes, 20, of Lake Station, and Mark Lyons, 19, of Hammond, concealed the three bottles inside the front of their pants and left the store. A security officer followed them, but the two left in a car before they could be stopped.

Downs and Lyons were pulled over by Lake Station police a short time later on Ripley Street at Interstate 80. When Portage police arrived, they were taken into custody and charged with theft and minor in possession of alcohol.

 

Portage police to take part in 'Click It or Ticket'

PORTAGE | The Portage Police Department will take part in the Memorial Day Click It or Ticket seat belt enforcement effort beginning today through June 2.

The annual enforcement effort is supported by the federal highway safety funding awarded to more than 250 Indiana law enforcement agencies.

During last year's efforts, participating Indiana agencies issued 18,104 citations to drivers for not wearing seat belts. During the same time period, there were 170 collisions and 12 fatalities on Indiana roadways involving unrestrained motorists, with 91 ejections occurring due to not using seat belts.
