CENTER TOWNSHIP | A 31-year-old man met one Joker who was not wild about the man trying to flee the scene of a burglary, police said.
Christoper Gilbert, of the Flint Lake Mobile Home Park on North Calumet Avenue, was in Porter County Jail on initial charges of burglary, resisting law enforcement and possession of a controlled substance following a break-in at another resident's home Monday morning.
Porter County Sheriff's Department officers went to the mobile home park about 8:30 a.m. and were told by a witness that Gilbert was seen leaving the residence. As police were investigating the home, the suspect was seen walking a short distance away. As Officer Jamie Erow set off in pursuit, additional backup was called, including Officer Matt Edwards and his dog Joker.
Authorities said Gilbert refused to stop when Erow ordered him to. Instead, he ran east through deep snows toward a fence with a barbed wire on top. As he jumped the fence, Gilbert's arm and a red sweatshirt he was carrying caught on the fence and were left behind along with other items that fell on the ground.
As Gilbert headed into a wooded area toward Angel Crest Cemetery, Joker arrived and caught him. Gilbert was treated for a dog bite and then taken to jail.
