Burglary, battery charges filed against ex-boyfriend

LIBERTY TOWNSHIP | Charges of burglary, domestic battery and interfering with reporting a crime were being filed against a Valparaiso man after he allegedly broke into his ex-girlfriend's trailer and took her cellphone and an X-Box gaming system.

The Porter County Sheriff's Department said the man pushed in a board covering one of the windows of the trailer in the 1200 block of Aspen Drive in Liberty Township about 2 p.m. Friday. The ex-girlfriend, 25, was at home with her three children, ages 1, 2 and 4.

The man reportedly demanded the X-Box, which the victim said she was renting, and, when she refused, he kicked over a TV, which also was being rented. When she threatened to call police, he took her cellphone, and, when she tried to leave, he pulled her back inside causing her to fall and hurt her leg, police said.

The value of the prepaid phone and the X-Box with two controllers was estimated at $130. The victim went to a neighbor's to call police after he left. Officers were unable to locate him, who reportedly occasionally lived in the trailer until a month ago. A warrant for his arrest was being sought.

Adult, 5 others arrested at underage drinking party

LIBERTY TOWNSHIP | Six people were arrested, including one adult, after Porter County Sheriff's police responded to a complaint of an underage drinking party Sunday morning.

Officers arrived at 215 Talon Dr. in Liberty Township about 1 a.m. as two males, both 20, were leaving the home. One, Jeffrey Kolbus, of Portage, was arrested after a breath test showed a 0.05 percent blood alcohol level. Police could hear others inside the house talking about the arrival of police and about hiding the alcohol and marijuana.

Luis Acuna Sr., 38, who was identified as the homeowner, met police at the door and at first denied any underage drinking was going on. Told of the one person already arrested, Acuna said his son, Luis Jr., 20, of Portage, and some of his friends were drinking beer from his refrigerator, according to police.

Acuna refused to let police in the house, but a 20-year-old woman, Kelly Williams, of Portage, was arrested as she left the home and registered a 0.03 blood alcohol level. After getting the search warrant, three other youths, Luis Jr., Daniel Espinosa, 19, and Irving Hernandez, 19, both of Portage, were found in a crawl space and arrested along with Acuna Sr.
