Hiding in Plain Sight

VALPARAISO | Hiding in Plain Sight: A Jewish Family Survives the Holocaust will be presented at 2 p.m. at Temple Israel, 1405 E. Evans Ave. Purdue University professor Robert Melton recounts the story of his family's survival during the Nazi occupation of Poland in World War II. Call (219) 462-9064.

Free bone density screenings

VALPARAISO | Bone density screenings planned from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the South Haven branch of the Porter County Public Library, 403 W. 700 North. This is a walk-in program and is sponsored by Steve Beach, RN, of Porter Health. Call (219) 759-4474.

Community bingo

PORTAGE | Community bingo begins at 1:30 p.m. at Rittenhouse Senior Living of Portage, 6235 Sterling Creek Road. Refreshments and prizes are provided. Call (219) 263-9383.

TUESDAY

Alzheimer's/dementia support group

PORTAGE | Alzheimer's/Dementia Support Group meetings are held for family members and/or friends caring for a loved one with Alzheimer's disease or a related dementia. The group meets at 6 p.m. at Rittenhouse Senior Living of Portage, 6235 Sterling Creek Road. It focuses on providing education and support. Group leaders and members provide emotional support, exchange care giving skills, share information about helpful community services and problem solve together. You do not have to have a family member at Rittenhouse Senior Living to attend. Call (219) 764-2900.

WEDNESDAY

Valpo library hosts book sale

VALPARAISO | The Friends of the Valparaiso Public Library will begin its four-day book sale with the Friends Only Preview Sale from 4 to 8 p.m. March 20 at 103 Jefferson St. Current Friends of the Library will be admitted, but patrons can purchase their 2013 membership to the Friends at the door. The public sale will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. March 21, 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 22. On March 23 from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. all items will be sold for $2 a bag. Proceeds from the sale are donated to the library and help fund many supplemental and special programming efforts. Call (219) 462-0524.

Career talk

Making a Living as a Writer will be offered to anyone who wants to find out what it's like to write, from experienced writers such as Meggie Tolkland and Neal Litherland. The event is from 6:45 to 7:45 p.m. at Valparaiso University's Harre Union. They will be answering questions as well as debunking myths such as how much writers can expect to make, how electronic publishing works (or doesn't work), what people need to get into the field, and all the other questions that budding writers and curious minds have to ask. Fish fry and bingo

PORTAGE | Portage American Legion Post 260 will hold its fish fry and bingo every Friday. Fish fry is at 4 p.m.; early bird bingo at 5:45 p.m. at the post, 5675 Mulberry Ave. Call (219) 762-3541.

SATURDAY

Indoor garage sale

VALPARAISO | An indoor garage sale will be held at the Valparaiso Moose Lodge from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 108 Indiana Ave. Call (219) 508-1050.

Easter egg hunt

KOUTS | The First Presbyterian Church of Kouts will host its annual Easter egg hunt from 10:30 a.m. to noon at 195 E. County Road 700 South. The event will include a free raffle for prizes and Easter baskets. There will be a special visit from the Easter Bunny. Cookies and punch will be served. All ages are welcome. Prize bags will be provided at the door. Rain date March 30. Call (219) 766-2430.
