A 34-year-old Porter man was killed in a crash Monday night on Interstate 65, two miles south of the U.S. 231/193 exit.

Michael S. Kehle was driving a Dodge Ram pickup truck south on I-65 when he failed to see traffic slowing ahead and hit the back of a 1998 Peterbilt semitrailer driven by a 50-year-old Merrillville man, police said.

The pickup burst into flames. Good Samaritans from other vehicles tried to pull Kehle from the pickup, but they had to turn back because of the heat of the fire, Indiana State Police said.

The interstate was shut down for several hours for crash investigation and cleanup, police said.
