VALPARAISO — Porter County Sheriff's police and the Porter County Coroner's office are investigating the cause of a single-car fatal crash here Monday morning.

Police were called to U.S. 30, just east of County Road 250 West, at 10:26 a.m.

Initial investigation, according to a news release from the sheriff's department, shows a red 1994 Ford Explorer from Fort Wayne was traveling eastbound when the SUV went off the roadway for unknown reasons and struck a tree.

Porter County Coroner Chuck Harris said the SUV went off the south side of the road and went airborne before striking a tree in the ditch.

Mikael Chambers, 18, of Fort Wayne, was pronounced dead at the scene, Harris said, adding the road conditions and speed of the vehicle are believed to be determining factors in the accident.

Assisting at the crash were the Valparaiso Fire Department and Sandberg's Towing.
