SOUTH HAVEN | Porter County police have arrested a 17-year-old Gary boy in connection with the March 29 armed robbery of the Family Express here.

Porter County police said the boy was arrested Thursday after family members took the boy to the Portage Police Department.

Police said family members took him to police after surveillance photos were released to local media outlets.

The boy is being held at the Porter County Juvenile Detention Center on an armed robbery charge through Porter County.

Police said a waiver hearing could take place next week to try to move the charge to adult court.

Porter County police Sgt. Larry LaFlower said the public's help after viewing the surveillance photos was instrumental in solving the case.

Police said a male walked into the gas station, at 363 W. U.S. 6, with a handgun about 11:30 p.m. and demanded the clerk hand over an undisclosed amount of money.

He left on foot with cash and a couple of cartons of cigarettes, police said.
