SOUTH HAVEN | Fire has destroyed a second home in this community this week.

Just before 2 p.m. Wednesday a fire broke out in a detached garage at 380 Brook Drive. It soon jumped to the ranch-style house, engulfing the home in flames.

Flames leaped from the roof of the home and thick smoke filtered through the neighborhood as firefighters used ground and aerial attacks to extinguish the fire.

"My brother and I were sitting at the kitchen table and we saw the smoke," said homeowner John Taylor Sr. He, his brother and his son, John Taylor Jr. were at home and were able to escape the home unharmed. His wife and daughter also reside in the home and arrived back home after the fire had started.

Taylor said they heard nothing before seeing the smoke at the garage, which is located about 10 to 15 feet to the back and side of the home.

The family has lived in the house for 22 years.

Fire officials said they would be investigating the cause of the fire.

Fire crews from South Haven, Union Township, Burns Harbor, Porter, Liberty Township and Portage battled the blaze.

On Monday afternoon, a home at 769 Heritage was destroyed in a fire. Its homeowner was injured and hospitalized. That fire also remains under investigation.
