PORTAGE TOWNSHIP | The fire that destroyed a residence Monday morning has been labeled suspicious by investigators.

The South Haven Fire Department was called to the 300 block of Friendship in the Pleasant Valley Mobile Home Park about 12:30 a.m. Monday, said Assistant Chief Tina Nabhan.

When firefighters arrived, there was heavy smoke and flames coming through the roof. The double-wide mobile home was vacant.

Nabhan said units from Liberty and Union townships, Burns Harbor and Portage assisted.

Nabhan said the home was still standing, but received significant damage and is uninhabitable. A mobile home to the south also received minor damage. There were no injuries.

The Porter County Fire Investigation Strike Team was called in to help investigate the cause of the fire along with the Porter County Sheriff's Department.

Anyone with information about the cause of the fire should call Porter County Sheriff's Department Detective Sgt. Tim Manteuffel at (219) 477-3131.
