SOUTH HAVEN | Work continued Friday on the installation of new playground equipment at Haven Hollow Park along County Road 700 North.
The new equipment, Portage Township Trustee Brendan Clancy said, is part of the continuing efforts to improve township parks.
The township purchased about $50,000 worth of playground equipment -- with most being installed at Haven Hollow. Clancy said the funds were available through the budget after the sale of the police substation to Porter County. Additional equipment is being installed at Field of Dreams park.
The township hired H&P Construction to oversee the installation -- being completed by second year students in the Ironworkers Local 295 apprenticeship program.
Clancy said the equipment, which features a fire truck apparatus for toddlers and a climbing apparatus and swings for older children, is being erected in a central part of the park. The two age-level pieces are also being located in the same area to be more convenient to parents.
The township is sponsoring a community day beginning at 10 a.m. Oct. 21 and is asking individuals or groups to come help complete the park by spreading safety mulch around the area and equipment.
