SOUTH HAVEN | An intoxicated man fired three rounds from a handgun, then ran from police but was arrested after a short chase early Saturday morning.

Police were called about 3:20 a.m. to a home in the 600 block of Osage Road, where a witness said Andrew Basiger, 20, of LaPorte showed up intoxicated, then pulled out a handgun. That witness told police the people in the house asked him to put away the gun, but Basiger instead went outside and was shouting that he wanted to speak to the witness.

Police were called, and Basiger left the area. Officers found him in the area. When he saw police, officers said he was still holding the handgun and started running away from them. An officer chased him, and he fell.

The officer ordered Basiger at gunpoint to drop the gun, which he did.

Police said the gun was loaded and they found two boxes of ammunition and a fully loaded magazine in his pocket.

According to police, Basiger said. “I shot the gun, so I ran,” but told police, “I would never shoot you, unless you shot me first.”

Police said he had a blood alcohol content of 0.18 percent.

He was charged with criminal recklessness, resisting law enforcement, possessing a handgun without a permit, public intoxication and minor consumption of alcohol.
