PORTAGE TOWNSHIP | Two men tackled an 18-year-old South Haven man after police said they caught him breaking into cars.

Kyle Slease, 18, of Portage Township, faces multiple theft and unlawful entry charges, as well as two outstanding warrants for alleged theft, battery and false informing.

Porter County sheriff's police were called to a burglary about 7:30 a.m. Thursday at a home in the 700 block of Devonshire Road.

When officers arrived, they found two men holding Slease to the ground. Officers quickly handcuffed Slease and separated him from the group that gathered around him.

One of the men who was pinning Slease told police that minutes before the altercation, he left his house and found someone rummaged through his pickup truck. He said he noticed a new pair of work boots missing and began checking the area.

He said his neighbor then came out of her house and said she just saw someone in her car.

The man looked down the street and saw Slease running. He and another resident caught up with the man and held him down until police arrived.

According to a police report, Slease told an officer he "didn't steal much" and apologized to his victims, many of whom gathered at the scene.

Police said Slease reportedly took cash, GPS units, stereo components, shoes, a cellphone, cigars, cigarettes and other items from at least five vehicles in the neighborhood.

He was arrested and taken to Porter County Jail without incident.
