SOUTH HAVEN | Thou shalt not steal ... air conditioners from a church.

The commandment has fallen on deaf ears, lately.

The Porter County Sheriff's Department said thieves are targeting churches in the South Haven area, taking air conditioning units apparently for the copper and other metals.

Police were called Friday morning to the South Haven Church of the Nazarene, 621 N. County Road 450 West. An employee of the church arrived there and realized one of the two air conditioning units was missing.

Police said the unit had been disassembled and connections to the building had been cut.

On Thursday, police investigated the theft of an air conditioning unit from The Way of Holiness Church at 426 W. County Road 700 North.

Porter County police Sgt. Larry LaFlower said the Church of the Nazarene theft is the fifth report of its kind in that area since Aug. 1.

Police are asking anyone with information about the thefts to call the Sheriff's Department Detective Bureau at 477-3140.

LaFlower urges anyone who sees any type of unusual activity around air conditioning units to call police immediately.
