PORTAGE TOWNSHIP | Police found five bags of heroin in the car of a Portage woman who had been stopped Thursday morning for a minor traffic violation.
Chana Lancaster, 32, was charged with possession of a narcotic drug and possession of a hypodermic needle — both felonies.
An officer spotted Lancaster's car cross the center line at about 12:22 a.m. Thursday in the area of Ind. 130 and County Road 450 West.
The officer said Lancaster was "shaking nervously" while he talked with her.
According to a Porter County Sheriff's Department report, Lancaster told the officer she was very tired, which is why she drove across the center line.
But the officer noted that she spoke "nervously and energetically" despite her claim of being tired.
While Lancaster sat in the officer's squad car as he prepared a written warning, an officer with a police dog arrived as backup and walked around Lancaster's car. The dog alerted officers to narcotics in the car.
Police said Lancaster permitted the officer to search her car, where a needle and metal spoon were found.
Police then found five plastic bags filled with heroin inside her purse, they said.
