Thomas & Friends return

VALPARAISO | Illiana Garden Railway Society presents Thomas & Friends from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 295 N. Ind. 2. Sodor's G-scale engines and rolling stock will revisit the Illiana Garden Railway Society's Bull Moose outdoor diorama.There will be a full assortment of the Sodor lines passenger coaches and freight bogies too, including Annie, Clarabelle and Francine along with the Troublesome Trucks, the Tipmouth Milkwagon and other favorites. Beginner's oil painting class

HEBRON | Hebron Public Library will hold a beginner's oil painting class  today and Aug. 26 at 201 W. Sigler St. Participants must attend both sessions to complete the flower still life painting. The cost is $55 per person, which includes instruction and all supplies to create a 16- by 20-inch painting. Registration and pre-payment are required. No prior painting experience is required. Book collection

VALPARAISO | The Iota Chapter of Kappa Kappa Kappa, Inc. will hold its used book collection from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at Home Mountain Printing, 3602 Enterprise Ave. Used books are gathered throughout the year for a sale in October at the National Guard Armory in Valparaiso. Sale proceeds support college scholarships for local high school students. Arrangements may be made for book pick up for the elderly and those people with disabilities. Call (219) 771-9437.

Portage Bacon Fest 2013

PORTAGE | Bacon Fest 2013 features Northwest Indiana restaurants, volunteer organizations, local churches and crafters from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Founders Square. This event will feature live music, inflatables for children, and different ways to eat bacon. Call (219) 762-1535.

Orak Shriners Music Festival

MICHIGAN CITY | The second annual Shriners Music Festival from 5 to 11 p.m. and will feature four bands: The Kinsey Report, The Corey Dennison Band, The Gerry Hundt Trio and Upsidedown and Backwards.
