PORTAGE TOWNSHIP | A Schererville man was arrested in the hay loft of a barn Wednesday night after police said he stole money from a South Haven area bar.

John Staples, 49, faces a felony theft charge and misdemeanor charges of criminal trespass and resisting law enforcement.

Police were called about 11:30 p.m. to Pepe's Mexican Restaurant, 809 McCool Road, for a report of a theft.

Police said a patron learned someone had taken something from the bar and left in a red pickup truck. The patron and his wife followed the red truck through the South Haven area, and ended up at 606 N. Ind. 149, where the driver parked the truck near a barn.

Police arrived and found no one in the truck. They called for the driver to exit the barn, but he no one came out, according to police reports.

Officers entered the barn, and found no one on the ground floor. Officers then climbed into the hay loft and found Staples crouched in a corner with his arms covering his head.

Police said Staples said he had lost his job and needed money. Police said he did not have permission to be in the barn.
