SOUTH HAVEN | Police said a South Haven man struck a child in the head, and also spanked that child so many times a handprint was visible on the child’s body.

Michael Sullivan, 29, was arrested and charged Monday with felony battery.

Porter County police said teachers at a Portage Township school noticed a cut on the forehead of the child and reported the injury to police and Child Protective Service. The child told police while at a local store the man struck the child in the head, which then hit the handle of the shopping cart, causing a cut to the forehead.

According to police, the child reported being spanked 30 times, although the man was going to spank the child 85 times.

Police said Sullivan told police he spanked the child for bad behavior at the store and because the child’s room was not cleaned.

Sullivan said the child earned “over 100” spankings, based on how long it was taking to clean the room, but he told police he only spanked the child 25 times.
