SOUTH HAVEN | Brad Gary has been volunteering at the South Haven Boys & Girls Club for about six years, helping to instill good sportsmanship in members.

"I can be having a bad day and then I go to the club and being with those kids makes everything worthwhile," said Gary, of South Haven.

Gary was recently named the club's volunteer of the year by unit director Ron Ranta.

Gary was thrilled with this announcement.

"I was surprised when I heard," he said. "I'm a different type of volunteer because when people look at me they see tattoos, but then I prove them wrong. I like to show people that I can be a good role model."

Gary volunteers basically as a coach in basketball, soccer and now flag football at the club.

"It's all about the kids," Gary said. "I love working with the kids and I think it's good for them to have a good role model."

Ranta feels his decision to make Gary volunteer of the year was long overdue.

"He is a great volunteer by his demeanor while he volunteers and his belief of good sportsmanship, honesty and fair play, which is the foundation of the league," said Ranta. "Brad has coached all three age groups in both basketball and soccer. Brad has no personal agenda. He just loves mentoring our members and helping them develop life skills that we instill at the club."
