CHESTERTON | Sylas Cates, if first appearances are an indicator, is going to be a strong boy, full of energy and a born leader.
Sylas was the first baby born in Porter County in 2013, welcomed into the world at 12:42 a.m. weighing 8 lbs. and 6 oz. at 20 1/2 inches long.
Sylas is the third child for mom Gina Trimble and dad Steve Cates, of Portage. Sylas also was welcomed by two brothers, T.J., 7, and Blake, 4.
T.J. and Blake said they aren’t too sure about the new baby because he won’t be able to play for a while, but they think he’ll grow up fast.
“I want him to play all kinds of games,” T.J. said. Blake said he wants the baby to “play with my toys.”
Trimble was past her due date of Dec. 26, so having a New Year's Day baby was a surprise, as was the emergency C-section birth.
She was comforted by visiting friends Brittany Harriman and Dorothy Wrencher. Nurse Laura Roof said there have been plenty of calls from more friends and family who plan to visit through the day.
“She’ll have a lot of company today so she won’t get much rest, but she has a good support network at home and can recover,” Roof said.
Nurse Diane Evans said a few babies had been born in the first hours of the new year, which is a change from many past years.
“Some years we’ve had to wait a long time, even a couple of days for a new year baby, so this was a nice surprise to get our new year baby in,” Evans said.
Trimble said she loves her new son’s rosy cheeks and hopes he has success in life.
Cates said his wish is his son continues to be a groundbreaker.
“I hope he stays in the spotlight,” he said.
