BURNS HARBOR | Three people were injured in a single-vehicle Tuesday on Interstate 94 near the Burns Harbor exit.

The crash happened at 1:10 p.m. as Hannah E. Nelson, 16, of Grand Rapids, Mich., was driving a 2004 Honda Odyssey and trying to merge into the middle lane from the left lane, according to a release from Indiana State Police. The left lane was closing because of construction.

Nelson swerved back into the left lane after realizing a semi truck was in the middle lane. This caused the vehicle to hit a construction barrier, the car then went into the shoulder and hit the concrete median.

Nelson was taken to Porter Regional Hospital in Valparaiso with non-life threatening injuries, police said. Her passengers and family, Elizabeth Nelson, 22, and Linda Nelson, 54, were also taken to Porter Regional Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Her other passenger and father, Roger Nelson, 52, did not want medical treatment.
