VALPARAISO — Fire department officials here are asking residents to shovel the snow around nearby fire hydrants and then post photographs of their work.

"Residents are sick of shoveling after over a week of snow, but the Valparaiso Fire Department is urging everyone to dig out one more thing — their neighborhood fire hydrant. No one knows when or where the next fire will strike, but when it does, valuable time spent by firefighters locating and clearing around your fire hydrant will keep firefighters from doing their main job, putting out the fire," said department public information officer Robert Schulte.

Schulte also suggests taking a picture while clearing the area around a nearby fire hydrant and posting it to Facebook and Instagram with the hash tags #valparaisofire and #hydranthero.
