VALPARAISO |  Gloria De Mission and Immanuel Lutheran Church will host the annual Cinco de Mayo Celebration on Sunday.

The festivities will begin with an authentic homemade Mexican lunch from noon to 1:30 p.m. Entertainment will be provided by the Gloria De Hispanic folkloric dance group. There will also be games for the children.

“Many people think Cinco de Mayo is Mexican Independence Day,” said Pastor Tomas Angon, Gloria De Mission. Cinco de Mayo actually commemorates the Mexican army’s 1862 victory over France during the Franco-Mexican War. “The holiday has evolved into a celebration of Mexican culture and heritage."

The family friendly celebration will be held at Immanuel Lutheran Church and School, 1700 Monticello Park Drive.

The event is free and open to the public. A free will offering will be accepted.

For more information, call Angon at (219) 462-8207, ext. 273.
