VALPARAISO | Dr. Larry and Patty McAfee and Mike Blythe held their annual “Take a Kid Fishing” event on July 13, 2013 as their project for the United Way of Porter County’s Day of Caring. Twenty-three children from Boys & Girls Clubs of Porter County spent the morning fishing with volunteers. Club members, many of whom have never fished before, learned the fundamentals of fishing including how to cast and work with live bait. Prizes were awarded to the Club members for catching the biggest fish, smallest fish, most fish, prettiest fish and ugliest fish. Afterward, the children were treated to a hot dog lunch and time in the swimming pool.
“One little guy came running up the hill to me shouting ‘I just caught a big mouth bass!’,” said Dr. McAfee. “He was so excited! His face was just beaming. That’s why we do this.”
